cost-wise I`m not too sure cause it depends on ur budget. However do bring plenty of cash, (USD), in small notes, no atms or credit cards. And do research on currency exchange rates first, cause it varies WIDELY at different places. Best,. "Sagaing hills and bagan should be well within the budget i`ve stated..."

Depending on where you stay, a cheap room in Yangoon or Mandalay will run you between $7US and $14US per night. The closer to the center, the higher the price generally speaking. Food is relatively inexpensive and shouldn`t cost more than $10US per day, unless that is you buy a coffee drink at the upscale cafe`s on the main street in Yangoon. Drinks and clubbing might also push that a tad higher. Depending on how you travel and the number of destinations, that too will influence your daily cost. Keeping it to Yangoon, Mandalay, Sagaing HIlls and Bagan should be well within the budget I`ve stated. You might stash a bill or two in your shoe as an emergency reserve.

    Q. Myanmar travel, cash, customs, currency??etc. etc.?
i will be on extended stay for business/pleasure in yangon and possibly mandalay. i know about myanmar's peculiar history and culture, and am currently practicing language (i am a fast learner but it is a tricky one!!!). ok so my specific question is as follows: i have a lump sum of money tens of thousands of dollars. i will be in and out of myanmar for a number of years.... mostly in from what i understand. i want at least 15,000 u.s. dollars with me in the country minimum. i also want the rest of my money closely accessible. i understand that it is considered relatively safe to carry cash around and in myanmar. but what about the following: how can i effectively declare this money when leaving the u.s. in cash (i.e. in excess of 10,000) do i need pay check stubs receipts etc. etc.? how about going through customs in myanmar? i know the country is relatively peaceful towards tourists but what about customs agents do they seize foreign money in excess of certain amounts, and/or tax you excessively? for some reason i feel it is less suspect and easier to move if i bring the bulk of my cash in chinese yuan rather than u.s dollars, but a worse exchange rate is this true? also what are my options for retrieving cash in myanmar? i think there are only two or three hotels in yangoon that will provide you cash based on a credit card. does this mean you cannot directly access a u.s./foreign bank anywhere in myanmar without paying at least 10% and holding a credit card (i do not own a credit card)? i know it seems like i answered my own question, but really i am interested in foreign bank accounts. for example can i access a chinese, thai, or swiss bank account in myanmar? i am also very interested in bringing large quantities of personal effects to myanmar. so for example i smoke cigars, drink tea, and eat chocolate and coffee. i would rather purchase those goods in bulk here and bring them to myanmar. i also use mild health products that could be difficult to find in myanmar or very expensive. such as foot callous cushions, sleeping pills, arch supports.. etc. etc. normal over the counter stuff. as well as contact lenses and glasses (both prescription). i know they restrict/tax excess of 50-100 cigars, and a kilo of organic products. where can i find specific information on penalties/tariffs for entering the country with a few thousand grams of tea, a few thousand grams of dark chocolate, health supplies in bulk over the counter and prescription etc. etc. ? i know this is a huge laundry list of extensive questions few probably have the answers to, but the most specific and most information i can receive the more thankful and grateful i am. also as aside note i am wondering about anti-malarial medications is it difficult to bring in more than a one year supply?? to recap i am staying extended. i know i will need to leave regularly to neighboring countries for visa updates etc. but have many items especially financial instruments that i want to bring direct from u.s. to myanmar i need specific answers or a reference to where i can find specific answers about how much i can accomplish. also as a side note i have studied extensively about the history, culture, military regime. my move is economic and cultural it has nothing to do with politics. i have no interests in the politics to me it is an unrelated, unfortunate circumstance of history that only the people of myanmar must deal with. i know about the phone taps, internet monitoring, and lack of electricity in many regions. i don't need answers and comments about this. i plan on staying only in areas where foreigners are allowed and plan on following to the best of my ability every law that the acting governing body of myanmar sets forward. i am just unsure about specific entry/exit details. thank you and have a great day!!!

    Q. Living in china and want to travel to thailand...?
i currently live in yunnan china and my wife and i were thinking of maybe traveling to thailand for a week or so. i was wondering if anyone had any ideas on a cheap way for us to do this. we know that there is no train to thailand, but we could take a train into laos (btw, is laos worth visiting or should we just pass through?). maybe we could take a boat? we could take a plane, but we want to try and save as much money as possible as we are planning a much bigger/longer trip for next year to tour china's "hot spots" . . . or does anyone have any other suggestions on places we could visit. yunnan is very close to laos, myanmar, and vietnam...would any of those places be nice to visit? we are thinking of doing this in the summer as we already have travel plans for spring festival...so maybe june or july. any ideas or help would be awesome. xie xie

"Travel inside nam is cheap too..."

The best air website to use is Air Asia. They do really cheap flights all over Asia. I used them to fly from China to KL- really cheap! http://booking.airasia.com/skylights/cgi-bin/skylights.cgi Vietnam = Amazing! And you can get the bus both in and out from Nanning - Hanoi. 12 hours approx. including border stop over. Travel inside Nam is cheap too, using trains and buses. :-)

    Q. $15,000us to blow on travel throughout south east asia, unlimited time. where/what would you go/do?
okay so i'm basically quitting everything that i do once i save $15,000. i plan for this to be my "while i'm still young and single" trip of a lifetime. my desires is to travel all around south east asia primarily being korea, all over china including taiwan & tibet, india, nepal, vietnam, thailand, laos. possibly mongolia, phillipines, cambodia, burma, and north korea. i plan to backpack and stay in hostels...i really want to be able to travel for 6 months but i'm a biiiig food lover. i will eat and eat and eat...so i know i won't save too much money in that area. i just want to take as many photos that i can and see great views, be humbled. any websites and insights will be of great help! especially on how i can travel within each area locally for cheap and maybe even cheap means of travel from one country to another like a local bus or train. i will begin my travel at earliest april 2010 and late as end of may 2010. lookout on weather conditions and what type of clothes to take would be good info too! thanks again in advance. -atcontroller

"Thailand / malaysia etc for a few dollars a night..."

On 15G you could travel in hostel accomodation for 2 years or more, including visas, tours etc. You can stay in a cheap locally run hostel in Thailand / Malaysia etc for a few dollars a night , China it's 30-100 yuan a night so a max of $8 and that'll get you a good YHA accredited one in most places. Pack a few essentials, and buy local clothes when you arrive, wear what the locals wear, for example a couple of 40 baht lightweight shirts saw me through 8 months in Singapore-northern Thailand, over to Taiwan and Japan, they dried in minutes, rolled up in the smallest gaps and were very hard wearing. Only thing I'd get before would be a decent pair of walking trousers, boots, secure backpack and a windproof/waterproof top with a few base layers. Do the hotter countries together, and yes Taiwan gets bloody hot in the summer. Even northern China where I worked since 2002 hits 35 in July - August and -30 in winter. I don't live by them, but always photocopy a few pages from guidebooks, you can throw these away after use, but they can be useful in emergencies, or if you just want to find a better stop for a decent shower and food or hooking up with other travellers and knowledgeable locals. I always travel by local buses when possible/safe and crossed borders overland from Sing to Thailand etc.

    Q. Traveling to maldives! advices?
i might be visiting to maldives on next month(may) but i don't know many facts about that country. i know general facts, i know it's really beautiful. but if i get there which island should i live? any cheap 4 or 5 stars hotels(not higher than $200) daily cost? what to do? i dont want to spend high amount of money. i will be traveling from burma. so, which airline would be cheap for business class?

"Is for you to visit a local travel agent - they get special rates..."

Hello Grrrrr! You are asking many questions here ! The simple advice is for you to visit a local travel agent - they get special rates on rooms & flights, so it is usually cheaper (and always much easier) for you to buy a package holiday rather than making the bookings independently. Make all your bookings before you leave - do not just arrive without a hotel reservation ! Choose the island based on your budget - you get what you pay for regarding luxuries & exclusivity, so spend your max $200 for the best resort. If you select a full board or all inclusive meal plan, you will have to spend very little extra. However, if you book B&B, and decide to go diving every day, and take spa treatments, and eat lobster, you will run up a big bill ! To do - relaxing, sunbathing, snorkeling, swimming, diving, fishing, visit local islands, dolphin-watch, enjoy great food. Some resorts have more sporting facilities, such as gym/tennis/yoga. Note that the night life is very quiet. Feel free to ask more questions if you wish. Good luck, and enjoy your trip.

"Travelling overland i averaged about 1000euro per month..."

If this is all overland you'll be heading through some fairly rough areas. You cannot get from Bangladesh to Burma overland at all. I wouldn't carry too much cash on your person at any one time in cash you get mugged. Travelling overland I averaged about 1000euro per month. I'm not sure how much I would say you need altogether, it depends how fast you are moving. Only visited Almaty in Kazahkstan, it was nice but nothing unique. Bangladesh is fantastic. Naples is one of my favourite cities. Tallinn is beautiful but full of tourist in summer. The people in Vietnam are really friendly. China is a must see.

    Q. Is this a genuine e-mail?
dear sir / madam, my email address kathylee.chow@yahoo.com please mummy and my daddy accept me as your daughter because i have lost my biological parents in the hurricane that occured in myanmar a few months ago. i am miss katherine lee, a 20 year old orphan from hangkai town in kachin state of myanmar. my country was recently affected by a disasterous cyclone and hurricane which affected irrawaddy delta regions e.g: ayeyarwady, bago east, mon and yangon areas of myanmar on the 2nd may, 5th may and 6th may of 2008. my entire family and i were living in the irrawaddy delta region when this deadly hurricane struck and i lost my entire family. i happened to be the only survivor. my only uncle and his entire family were also consumed by this evil and the deadly hurricane. however,i was able to secure the information which shows that my uncle had a fix deposit account valued at the sum of $ 10.8 million deposited in one bank outside myanmar. my uncle was into crude oil / petroleum business in one of the middle east countries before he decided to come back to myanmar to establish his own business a few months before the deadly hurricane sruck. i have contacted the bank where my uncle deposited the funds by email and they requested me to secure a letter of administration from a high court in myanmar as the only survivor in my entire family that entitles me as the sole beneficiary of my uncles funds.i have already secured the letter of administration in my name dated 20th october 2008. i was also requested by the bank to present a woman or a man that is above 30 years who will receive the above funds on my behalf from the bank since a 20 year old girl like me can not receive the funds from the bank according to the constitution of that country. my major reason for contacting you is for you to assist me in receiving the funds from the bank because they have given me a short time to claim the funds or the funds will be forfeited to a new company that wants to acquire the bank with a new name according to the constitution of that country. you will receive the funds through your account in your country on my behalf for you to assist me in furthering my education and for investment purposes on my behalf. you and i will enter into a legal agreement and your compensation for assisting me is already indicated in the legal agreement which i will send to you. i will later send you the three documents regarding the funds payment to you namely,a copy of the legal agreement between the two of us, a copy of my church identification and a copy of the letter of administration secured from a high court in myanmar in my name as the sole beneficiary of the total funds deposited in the bank. i have no passport and no traveling documents therefore as soon as you receive the funds, you will send me some money from the funds to enable me secure my passport and other traveling documents for me to come over to your country. since i have not met you before,i have the strong faith and belief in god almighty that you will not take an advantage of my helpless situation. as soon as you respond to this my appeal proposal through my email address kathylee.chow@yahoo.com i will send you all the necessary documents regarding this funds transfer to your account and my church identification to enable the bank contact you immediately for the purpose of releasing the funds to your account in your country within a very short period. thanks, yours daughter, miss katherine lee. --------------- i've received this email today. i am willing to adopt. so what shall i do? thanks.
