| ![]() Powered by | ![]() Q. Question - newbie to rvs, travel trailers, camping - cost to rent space in parks? |

Q. I'm looking to rent a travel trailer/rv that will deliver and setup in new paltz, ny. my car can't tow a rv. i live in vt, 5 hours from new paltz where i'll be at a training for almost 2 weeks. a co. in vt delivers and sets up rvs anywhere. it will cost $1195 total for however long i keep the trailer in new paltz. i'm looking for a rv dealer near new paltz who will deliver and setup. my vw can't tow anything, i'd rather not drive a big rig, and the rv will remain at the same site until i leave. i'll use my car while in new paltz. i'm looking for temporary housing for me and my cat because i can camp for free where the training is but prefer not to have to use a tent if i can find a rv cheaper than $1195. if i can find a better deal at a nearby b&b or motel, that's even better. thanks for any tips!
"There people who haul trailers but beware if they are not bonded and insured..."
I would suggest to save the hassle check the websites below.
There people who haul trailers but beware if they are not bonded and insured. That being said, there are many full time RVers. I would go to escapees.com and locate the Escapee coordinator (for get-togethers) in you area. At the very worst, shoot them an email and they'll get you in touch with they couple. Then...they would know who might be willing to take their truck and haul your rig for a fee. I've heard some charge in different ways: a flat fee, a flat fee plus gas, an amount per mile (both coming to get the trailer and taking it to where it should go), or an amount per mile from pick up only. The last document also gives some numbers to call. Good luck.

Q. How much would this be , i have a kia spectra 2008 and i want to rent the uhaul 5x8 trailer? how much would it be for the trailer, hitch and ball . i have no attachment for the trailer and i cant seem to find out how much it would cost for it . also if its possible to use my type of car to do a 1000 mile travel with this trailer . i would like to rent the truck but we have a baby and you cant have babies in the truck i would presume .
on uhaul.com it gave me the choice for the 5x8 trailer when i put in my car specs so they believe it can be towed . im looking for someone that might have done this already.
"Plus a kia can't tow a trailer that heavy!..."
You can't tow without a hitch & ball being welded to your car first. Plus a Kia can't tow a trailer that heavy!

Q. Buy a trailer or rent a house? i am visiting my family after 6 years of living outside of the u.s.. the choices for me are:
stay with relatives
buy a trailer
or rent a house.
i will only be in the states for a month and i will be returning to my never ending travels and pursuit of adventure.
it would cost me about 2,000 us to rent a partially furnished house for a month.
or
i can buy a cheap trailer (yes it is a nice one) for the same amount.
i don't want to stay with family. i like them, but there is a reason i travel around. i don't like being around people constantly and find that traveling lets me be alone in a way that can not be achieved when surrounded by family.
i own land in the u.s. and purchasing the trailer would add some value to my land, as it is considered an improvement. this would be a real investment. however, empty trailers do tend to attract problems. i would be leaving after a month. on the other hand, i have someone who has said that they would watch and care for it when i am not there (as in use it but make sure not to trash it). the trailer is a single wide, formerly lived in, in good shape and great condition. i have even had it inspected. it is worth a lot more than they are willing to sell it to me for. more importantly, it would be there when i finally return to the states permanently. which i do plan to do but not for several years more. i like it out here.
if i rent a house there is no investment. but there is also no muss, no fuss. it would be a quick rental and give me a place to go to take a breath as i am visiting the relatives. utilities would be included and once i leave i don't have to think about it again.
i am torn.
and i could really use the advice.
thanks in advance.
"To live in the trailer and take care of it then..."
I am always for investing! Rent isn't investing anything.
SO, if you could find a "caretaker" to live in the trailer and take care of it then you win in the long run! ! ! Probably would add a value of $10,000 to the land????

Q. Is it better to live in a 5th wheel trailer or an apartment? i'm going to college and considering living in a 5th wheel travel trailer for the next 4 or more years, i found one pricing at 18 grand, and the resale would be about 10 grand or more i imagine, whats the cost of electric, sewage, the price to rent property, its in illinois in the middle, does anyone know if its a better idea to just rent an apartment or get a 5th wheel. the apartment is 450 a month, and i could be in school for 8 or more years to get a doctorate. so i figured it would cost 43 grand in rent, i'd get 10 back with the trailer, which is a better idea?
"To pay park rent on the fifth wheel anyway..."
A couple of considerations - You will need to pay park rent on the fifth wheel anyway , so find out where you can park it inexpensively long term. If you are concerned about a social life and you are college age, you'll have way more fun in an apartment complex than you will in an RV park with old folks, but you will definitely meet a lot of new people in an RV park. The fifth wheel can go with you if you decide to move across the country, but it can also feel very small after awhile! My stepson lived in his for about 8 months while he traveled for work, and was very glad to get back into a "regular" house.

Q. Do i have to buy a hitch when renting a trailer? its for a vw beetle 1998. i'll be using one of the smallest trailers and traveling form louisiana to minnesota. on the site the hitch costed $125. can't you rent these from uhaul?
"U-haul will not rent hitches..."
U-Haul will not rent hitches, as they require tapping into your vehicle's electrical system.

Q. Anyone have a house or condo for rent or sale or want to split weekends in new braunfels, tx? the wife and absolutely love going to new braunfels, tx but it gets expensive going on a regular basis and paying for hotels every time. we're thinking of buying a fifth wheel or travel trailer, but also considered a condo or house. is there anyone else that has any good ideas for getting a weekend getaway in new braunfels? or anyone that wants to talk about how to solve this dilemma? or split some costs?
I think you'll have better luck finding someone if you put an ad in the paper or if you contact a real estate agent.

Q. How much would it cost to move? ok i am moving from michigan to oklahoma i was wondering how much it would cost to rent a uhaul for 2 days to get all my things down there and an estimate on gas cost would be great the exact mileage is 1009 miles and we are driving a pickup truck with a uhaul trailer. and what are the costs for out of state uhaul traveling.. it would be great if i could get a estimate not a link thank you very much
"The trailer is rented by a flat fee..."
I can't give you an exact figure because I don't know what cities you are moving to and from. The trailer is rented by a flat fee plus sales tax and an optional protection plan. From Detriot to Oklahoma City with the 6'x12' trailer is $981. The SafeMove protection is $48. This covers damage to the trailer, up to $5000 of the contents, and a personal injury coverage. You can also get $10,000, $15,000 and $20,000 for additional charges. Then you need to take your total figure and add Michigan's sales tax, if it applies. You really need to talk to a local U-Haul dealer to set this up, and they can give you a better number than I can from here. You can also look up the price on http://www.uhaul.com , but they won't tell you about the taxes, or the SafeMove.

Q. Owning a rv / trailer to live in.? hi
i woke up this morning and had the sudden realization that i just spent 30,000 dollars over the past 3 years renting my studio apartment. i realized that all that money, in the end, didn't go to anything long term.
i looked up what it costs to actually by a condo. however, the cheapest ones i could find (i live in los angeles) were around 250,000 dollars. of course, i would like to live in an area that's as nice as my current one (culver city) or perhaps even nicer. the condos in my area cost about 400,000 dollars for a decent 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 1 parking, secure building. i do not want to live in anything worse than that, because i deserve to live in a clean, safe, and nice neighborhood. however, paying $400,000 dollars isn't easy. i figure, the down-payment alone would be about $50-$80 thousand dollars up front. that's just for teh down-payment. plus the extra 20 years of paying off the mortgage. not only that, it would take me about 10 years just to come up with the down-payment!
i really feel stuck, like there are bad options and worse options. if i keep renting, i would have paid 50,000 dollars to my landlord by the next two years (which is enough for a downpayment for a nice condo i could eventually own). if i try to buy my own place, it would be 10 years before i have enough for the downpayment (i would be 40 years old by then), and then the addition 20 or 30 years paying off the mortgage.
either option isn't viable. what if i get sick? what if i get laid off?
then i started thinking about a trailer.
i looked up prices on a decent sized trailer that are larger than my studio apartment. not only do they look pretty nice inside, but they're also larger. plus, the average price hovered around 12-15 thousand dollars. including the truck i would have to get to actually haul it around, the total price would be about 20 thousand dollars.
i figure, i could have all that paid off in less than 2 years. not only would it be nice to have my own place paid off in just 2 years, but the amount of money i could save could go toward a down-payment on a real condo. i could actually save money faster by buying off a nice trailer, then not have to pay rent for about 5 years, and just save it up to put a down-payment on a really nice condo.
the idea of living in a trailer (keep in mind, not dirty, trailer-trash type, but a nice, clean, large trailer) seems eccentric even to me. but when i think about being able to pay it off in just 2 years, also owning it (and therefor having something to actually show for all that money spent), but also being able to live in it without paying further rent would be nice. plus, it would be really nice to drive to some seculuded beach on friday nights and living there over the weekend, then drive back into the city monday thru friday for my regular job. it doesn't seem like it's out of the realm of possibility. it's something i can actually afford. and, i could do it this summer.
i would like to live in a trailer because it would be nice to actually own it after it's paid off (in 2 years), not have to pay rent anymore, be able to save up money faster for a real condo much quicker, and plus being able to travel to different locations during the weekend.
i'm wondering.... to anyone who actually does live in a trailer or is doing something similar... what are the hidden costs of doing so? how expensive is it to pay for maintenance, propane, water, electricity?
basically, does this actually seem like a viable solution to someone in my financial situation? what are the inconviences of living in a trailer? what do you like about it?
thank you for reading this really long post. i've just got a lot on my mind right now. my life has to change. things have to change. living in a trailer (a nice, clean, large trailer, with flat screen tv, etc...) not only seems like a financially viable solution that could save me money, but it also doesn't seem so bad being able to move around to secluded woods or a beach over the weekends.
any thoughts / suggestions would be awesome. thanks again.
"With my job i had to travel a lot and hotel costs were..."
At first I wasn't going to answer this because you wrote a book instead of getting to the point. However since I lived in my motorhome for 4 years I felt obliged. With my job I had to travel a lot and hotel costs were going to kill me. I decided on a motorhome so I could tow a car and have something with decent gas mileage once I got to my destination. As far as hidden costs. RVs are not designed to live in long term. One year of living in one is like 10 years of wear and tear on a house. With the small living area the flooring, be it carpet or laminate, will wear out. My furnace went out when it was 5 years old. Other costs, RVs are not as well insulated as a house, so adverse weather will cost you either for cooling or heat. In Spokane Wa in the winter I was filling a 100lb propane tank every other week.
However, the good points. Being able to pay $200 a month for a parking space, and that included electricity. That was great! And if I was having company, it only took me 15 minutes to clean my whole house.
