"You could probably pick up a wooden 40-foot boat for as little as $10-$15,000..."

You pose a question that`s tough to answer. You could probably pick up a wooden 40-foot boat for as little as $10-$15,000, or you could play somewhere approaching $1 million, depending on gear and condition. Best bet would be to go online to used boats. com or another site nd have a look around. On 7/17/09 12:35 PM, "mike. com" . Mark Pillsbury Editor, Cruising World 55 Hammarlund Way, Middletown, RI 02842 401-845-5106 (work) 401-441-3790 (cell).

"" fiberglass yachts age well so you can go..."

The honest amswer to your questions is "almost any price. " Fiberglass yachts age well so you can go back 10 - 20 years and still get a decent boat, but the starting point is to determine your budget. If you go to our website, www. net and look under Used Boats you see several boats in the 39 - 42 foot range in a variety of price. However, the best bargains right now are on new boats. We`re clearing out our `09s at dealer cost, so a Hunter 41 is around $250,000 normally $299,000(an absolutley beautiful boat that even is large enough to live aboard) and the Hunetr 38, also a very good sizes boat, is $225,000, normally $259,000. Yachts are financed over 20 years, so the monthly payment on a Hunter 41 with good credit is about $1,700, with 20% down. Craig Fecker CEO Cruising Yachts, Inc.

"And quality of yacht you intend to purchase..."

I would say that it all depends on the age and quality of yacht you intend to purchase . You could pick up an second-hand yacht in poor condition for under 100,000 USD, but you would then need to look at how much to invest to bring it back in to good shape. A new 40ft yacht could cost upwards of 250,000 USD. What I would suggest is give me your ideas and proposed budget you have in mind, I can then see if we can find a suitable yacht for you.

There are far too many variables for me to answer this question in simple terms. How and where do you plan to use the vessel, live-aboard, use it recreationally, take it off-shore, use it in the Bay with occasional coastal trips, how many do you wish to accommodate over night, do you have much sailing experience, what is your budget, do you prefer new or used. After answering these questions I can assist you much better, otherwise I would not be much help as I would simply be guessing at your needs and desires.

    Q. How is living on yacht compared to a townhouse/condo?
has anyone lived on a 40 foot +/- yacht? i see them outside my office window all day and it seems like a relaxing life. are they really too small to live(single) comfortably and how fast do they depreciate? a quick seach revealed that a 40 footer cost more or less the same as a condo or small house, but what are the upsides of living on a boat(other than being mobile)?

"Solar bag/sun shower to heat your shower water each day or will you need..."

It is a very relaxing life, and you can live quite comfortably on a sailboat, depending on what your expectations and needs are. You should be able to buy a 40 footer for much less than a condo would cost in most places, by the way. Here is an answer I gave yesterday to someone who asked a similar question. I hope it helps. Living on a boat is not for everyone. It is a lifestyle that can be great fun and very relaxed, but you have to work a little harder to be comfortable. Can you try it for a little while without having to make a committment? You have to make arrangements for water and to have your holding tank pumped out. Most people go ashore for water - sometimes to a marina dock. In a very few places there is water delivery to boats, but in my experience that is not the norm. I have never seen that happen. When we anchored for longer periods my husband and I often dinghied 5 gallon jugs of water back to our boat on a regular basis - every time we went ashore. What about power? Do you want to have electricity? If so, you need to think about wind generators or solar panels, depending on where you live. How about refrigeration? That is the biggest consumer of energy on a boat. There are options that use less power, but they tend to be more expensive. Do you want to be able to have a hot water shower on the boat? Is it hot enough where you live to use a solar bag/sun shower to heat your shower water each day or will you need a water heater? How about cooking? If you have a propane stove, especially a Force 10, two burner with oven, that will be great, and many people also have a BBQ in the cockpit. With propane you should have a propane detector in your cabin and bilge as propane sinks if it is leaking, and could collect in the bottom of your boat and cause an explosion. If you anchor, you have to dinghy ashore everyday. You may need to lock your dinghy when you go ashore, depending on where you are anchored. Will you have a vehicle on shore? If so, that will make life easier, as you will not have to backpack laundry, groceries, etc. If you are depending on getting ashore by dinghy to get to a job, what about the days when it might be too rough to get the dinghy ashore? Do you want to have TV and Internet on your boat? We used a cell phone to have Internet access when we were anchored. Sometimes we were fortunate enough to be able to receive an unsecured wireless signal. For TV, you might be able to receive the free channels from you boat if you put an antenna high enough. The reception will of course vary with the movement of the boat. Depending on your location, you may need to protect all you clothing from humidity and mildew. We rolled all of ours and packaged everything in airtight ziploc bags to keep the moisture out. Some people who live on boats choose to rent a slip at a marina and then they can have most of the conveniences of a land based home while living on a boat. Not all marinas allow live aboards. I would live on a boat again in a flash if the opportunity presented itself with the right person. My husband and I enjoyed it immensely and had wonderful adventures. We were happy vagabonds. We were both retired though, so we did not have to worry about getting ashore for work, etc. So I hope I have given you some food for thought. Most people I know who live on boats and work ashore actually live in a slip at a marina, but I also know a few who anchor and dinghy ashore everyday to a job. Best of luck with you plans. I would do it. Feel free to ask about anything else you think I could help with. Best of luck.

    Q. How much did abby sunderland's "2001 open-40, solo" boat cost?
can't find out anywhere. just looking for a ballpark estimate or maybe a link to listings of the same boat for sale. here are the boat details according to her website: designer: jutson yacht design, australia builder: a.s.a. yachts pty, australia model: open 40, solo built: 2001 it also has a lot of custom sails, rigging, and electronics.

    "Is a jutson 40 design..."

Sorry, but I don't understand why people feel a need to give answers on things they have no idea about... Abby's Dad, is a boatwright, and a lifelong sailor... No way in this world would he pay $500,000 for a boat. Even for his daughter to sail around the world - because it is not necessary, and a foolish expense. Safer blue water boats can be purchased for much-much less. So, know from that, this "experienced" boater would find a solid, safe, comfortable boat at a real deal. And that is just what he did. Abby's (9 year old) Open 40 cost him only $90,000. Abby's "Wild Eyes" (by the way) was formerly Alan Paris's BYC Velocitya. On which Alan sailed into the history books as the first Bermudian and the 125th person ever, to sail around the world alone. While "BTC Velocitya" is a Jutson 40 design, it was built by John Sayer who told me (when he was building it back in 2001) that he was using a female mold, Divinycell foam, FGI boat epoxy Resin, and a mixture of Kevlar and "E" glass stitched cloth. John built the vessel for Alan at a cost of $300,000. Now mind you, that was just the price for the shell boat and mast. All the goodies and extras had to be paid for by Alan. So, "Wild Eyes" was indeed a good deal even though she is a nine year old boat. However, there was an awful lot of new "stuff" added to Wild Eyes after they bought her - including the new updated electronics, and a paint job (of which I am sure the sponsors paid for). Happy & Safe Boating, John

    Q. How much does it cost to maintain a sailboat?
we'd like to know how much it would cost for all the indirect costs of owning a 20-40 foot sailboat/yacht... such as: - insurance - docking fees (on the east coast) - maintenance - other if we had 100k to spend, what size could we reasonably afford? we'd be looking for used, not new.

"Will cost you twice as much as a 20 foot boat..."

The below link has lots of good information including an idea on costs for the things you mention. It is certainly worth a visit if you are thinking of buying a sailboat... One thing for sure... EVERYTHING you do regarding money - is determined by the length of your boat. Insurance, Dock or slip fees, stowage, haul outs, raising & lowering the mast, sails, rigging, maintenance - EVERYTHING! is a per foot fee based on the length of your vessel. To say a 40 foot boat (even after it is long paid for) will cost you twice as much as a 20 foot boat, is very true - but actually, it will cost you much more then twice the amount... Why? because the bigger boat requires larger stronger sails, heaver guage, stronger and longer rigging, etc. etc. Check out the link - it explains it all...As well as it will help you decide on the size boat you need. Just remember, where and how you are going to use your boat, your comfort, and the easy and simple sailing aspects of a smaller vessel, all need to combine in a way that fits your philosophy and pocket book - this is what really makes for the best of sailing. Q. What is the average annual cost of ownership for a 40" boat?
say i wanted to buy this boat: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1998-silverton-39-foot-motor-yacht-one-owner_w0qqitemz200205006038qqcmdzviewitem?hash=item200205006038 what should i expect anderage annual cost of ownership to be? how often will the engine & generator need to be rebuilt? how often will i need to fill the fuel tank for average usage(cruising around and linking up for some beverages). what will that run? give me as much info as you can!

    "Cruiser runs annually..."

There's an old saying for your question... "Chances are if you are asking about the cost it's a pretty good chance you can't afford it." Now with that said that wasn't meant to be a smart a$$ed response. Here's a overview of what our 33' cruiser runs annually... slip $3600 and that's very reasonable fuel we carry 180 gal. Normal fillup last summer was around $300. # of fillups 8 or 9 but this was with fuel running @ $3.29/gal & who knows where it will be this year insurance runs us about $1200/year maintenance is around $2500 food, booze, etc probably another $1500 eating at restaraunts on the water: $1500 transient slip fees: $750 Winterization: $1100 DeWinterization: $300 and other lil' things that just keep on adding up, and up, and up... : ) Rebuilding the engine & gen? No clue but if maintained properly you may not have to worry about it! Boating while a great life is also an expensive one. The vessel you're looking at though would qualify under IRS guidelines as a 2nd home so you can write off the interest paid (but check with your tax advisor to make certain). Good luck...and of course...good boating!
