i was a smoker for a while. i am 23 years old and have quit about 2 weeks ago. i was smoking since i was 18 years old. now, i am still coughing up yellow mucous and hoping that it will end soon. i am supposed to be going up to meps within like a couple of days. now, what can i do to calm the coughing so i don't get rejected? i'm joining the air force.

Q. Anyone know why when i cough, my mucous tastes like buttered popcorn?
i've heard the body produces strange tastes to relay symptoms to the individual based on the cough. for the past month, my cough is accompanied by expectorations (sometimes dark yellow, white and occasionally brown) that taste exactly like buttered popcorn but i dont know what that could mean. i dont take prescriptions, occasionally smoke cigars and otherwise live a healthy and fit lifestyle. any ideas?

about a month ago, i developed a cough with mucous.i was having fatigue and wheezing in my chest.so after a week i went to my dr.he said i had bronchitis and gave me zithromax and atuss.i finished all the antibiotics,and it's been almost 2 weeks and i am still coughing and spitting out green and yellow phlegm.why is this happening even after taking meds?will it ever go away.i have never had a cough last this long.i have never smoked cigarettes.every time i take a deep breath it triggers a coughing spell. just to add,i don't have a fever and i have also been sneezing and itching eyes.my husband and son have a common cold right now.is it possible i've caught that even after being on antibiotics?

After a cold you can cough up to two months, normally, after the infection has cleared due to the body recovering from an illness - almost always the infection has cleared. The cough continues in part due to postnasal drip as well as sheer irritation after several weeks of coughing . The irritation can be to the point where deep breaths can trigger it, laughing, etc. Other causes of a prolonged cough are reflux, asthma, and allergies. Or you may very well have caught another cold on top of the other one. And yes, smoking - through sheer irritation - can also worsen or slow recovery; fortunately this is not a factor for you. That being said, there are also a very small percentage with infections (pneumonia, tuberculosis, etc. etc.) Long story short, you should see your doctor again, but don't think off the bat he doesn't know what he's talking about if he says you're over your cold and don't need antibiotics, and treats you with something else. Oh and be aware some cold medications can worsen a cough, for instance medications that break up mucus because you are now coughing up all that newly loosened crud.

ok, so i keep getting this off and on. this is probably the third time since august/september, and i believe this happened a couple times last year as well, but it seems to get worse each time. maybe some of you have had these symptoms or know.. i'm thinking pneumonia, bronchitis, upper respiratory infection, or maybe just a cold? sinusitis.. i don't know, that's why i'm asking! here's my symptoms. (by the way, i'm a 19 year old female, not overweight, eat healthy, drink tons of water! don't smoke, drink sometimes.. and slightly asthmatic.) -coughed up a bit of blood (when it's not bloody, i'm coughing up chunks of green/brown/yellow) -mucous from nose is clear -chest pain, esp when coughing, severely so. it's stinging/burning pain in throat and chest. -slight fever throughout the day.. anywhere from 99.5 - 101, nothing big yet. -shaking, only while coughing. -some shortness of breath -can't taste/smell/hear well (not as well as normal) -stuffy nose, sore throat, but no white spots on it. slightly red -some drainage -loss of appetite (probably because i can't taste anything, but who knows) that's the major stuff. if you had any of those illnesses, you can be of some help! thank you!! any questions, let me know!

Well you sound like you have a lung and sinus infection. Take some anti biotic and you should be fine.

i quit smoking 5 days ago. ( go me!) now, i am coughing up tan and yellow phlegm with brown flecks in it. i got a head cold the day that i quit but that went away before i started to cough and stuff. for the most part my lungs feel free from clog. i don't feel sick. in fact i have been playing sports better than i did when i smoked.(i never played them when i smoked) this nasty stuff, that tastes horrible, is brought forth by a cough that seems to vibrate my lungs like a loose balloon. any other time i cough normally and only clear thin mucous comes up. so what do you think?

Good for you - I quit last July They are just clearing themselves out. I dont know how long you smoked but my doctor said I should get a CT scan of my lungs to check for beginnings of cancer once a year after I had quit for a year. (X-RAYS dont really show everything) The problem is alot of insurances wont pay- unless the doctor writes on the order that you are complaining of breathing problems or chest pains ;<) Also- this is a good idea because if you get cancer you dont feel it until it has gotten so bad it cant be cured.

ok. so about a month and a half ago (about mid-march) i had sex a lot and then started having a really itchy vagina and i just assumed it was from rough sex... but then it kinda turned into a bladder infection cuz it hurt really bad when i pee. so after about two weeks of putting up w/ that i suddenly developed this really stupid and annoying cough.. i have no idea why but that's the only symptom i got was a cough. it started the 1st few days of april, and for about a week i was itchy and in pain and coughing and it sucked.. but then the itchyness/pain went away and the cough stayed. the cough got worse and i felt like i had walking pneumonia or something cuz i was coughing up green st everywhere. there was so much fluid in my lungs and i dont smoke or do drugs. well, it wasn't going away so last friday i went to the doctor, saying i'd had this cough for like a month, and she said it was just a bacterial infection and she gave me augmentin pills, an inhaler and some cough syrup. i used them for about 3 days and all the sudden i just broke out into the worse rash down there... ugh, it was red, itchy, hot, painful, and this weird brown discharge (which might have been from almost starting my period). i tested for a yeast infection and it say my ph level is 5.5. that's not normal, but im treating it anyway so now im putting cream on it and taking some pills for the yeast infection. my cough has cleared up a little bit but not much. now it's more of an itchy dry cough, not much mucous. i do have congestion in my nose now though. ugh. anyway so today, i often felt like i had to pee, i drank a crap load of water but everytime i peed i felt only a little darkish yellow pee comes out (not smelly). i just looked at my "yeast infection" (who knows what it is, there's no red bumps or warts or st like that), but i noticed some chunky, really white stuff coming out of my urethra, yes like where i pee. what the **** is wrong w/ me. i swear i'm so tired of being ill. nothing is helping me. i've had a cough for a month and i'm afraid i have some serious vaginal bacterial infection or some std like gonorrhea or something, though im positive the guy i had sex with is not sick. he never ejaculated in me, he pulled out and clearly im not pregnant. can anyone tell me what i might have? and what i can do? i'm going to go to the doctor eventually, but i just wanna see what you guys say.

Go to your gynecologist--it could be a yeast and/or bladder infection. You are going to have to be diagnosed and treated with medication
